Otoscopes

Riester is a Germany based company which has been supplying medical diagnostics equipments for past 60 years. Riester products are simple in design and available at affordable prices. Riester products are declared ready to be sold only after they have passed several quality tests .Riester Otoscope is generally not available separately; it comes in a kit which also includes an ophthalmoscope.
Riester Otoscope is multipurpose equipment and is marketed as an ENT Otoscope because, apart from its main use in examining the inside of the ear, it can be also used to examine the inside of the nose and the throat. It is mainly used to check the conditions of the outer and middle auditory canal which also includes the Tympanic membrane (ear drum). Riester is known for their conventional Otoscopes. A Riester Otoscope comes in a set comprising of three different parts that can be assembled together before use. There is a cylindrical base to which the actual Otoscope is attached and works as a handle as it is held in the hand to control the movements of the otoscope. There is a compartment in the handle which contains rechargeable battery. The other part is the head which is the actual otoscope and is attached to the handle. At the front end of the head a magnifying lens and a light source (for illumination) are installed. Specula of various sizes and thickness are provided so that suitable one can be employed depending upon the requirement; they generally come in sizes varying from 2mm up to 6mm. Speculum is attached at the front end of the otoscope which is then inserted into the ear.
Riester Otoscopes are available in different models which come under different brand names. The most popular brand in this category is ‘UNI’ and its different versions are available. Given below a brief description of some Riester Otoscopes and their available features:
UNI I
2.7 V instruments with vacuum lamps.
2.5 V instruments with HL halogen lamps.
3.5 V instruments with XL xenon lamps.
With reusable ear specula 2, 3 and 4 mm.


UNI III too comes with the same illumination configuration and set of specula but its lens provides 4X magnification, and it is not available separately, it comes with an Ophthalmoscope.

Riester makes only portable Otoscopes. Reister Otoscopes are currently supplied in 150 countries and it is one of the most highly sold products of Reister.
